Sustain Emergency Kit Design

Although California is not as known for its tsunamis, there is a very prominent fault line that scientists have expected a major earthquake in the next 100 years that will shake up life as residents know it. Due to a preliminary survey where California residents were asked how prepared they were for an emergency, many had not prepared an emergency kit themselves even though 100% had experienced an earthquake and 75% responded that they had been in an emergency situation. Any provided kits given must provide for a lack of preparedness from the individual residents. The packaging would be sent from the sky to areas with significant damage to ensure the victims are sustained while the disaster is taken care off and until next steps are obvious. Due to the location of the fault, the language of the kit will be English and Spanish.

The Sustain logo can be simplified to the SOS because the arrow in the SUS joins the O together to ensure the user knows it is an emergency and therefore the instructions should be taken seriously despite the fun colors the bags may bring when thrown from the sky. The colors are also chosen (red, white, and black) to create a more serious tone on the packet.

Inside the hypothetical first aid kit sits the packet that helps the user understand what is happening, what to do after the earthquake is stopped, and how to sustain after the initial shock. The Sustain logo is seen in multiple places throughout the packet and the color scheme is consistent to show the user it is all information that is needed. The bags are secured with a lanyard that can be taken off and used. Inside the packet, there is a card that can be punched out and written on, it provides first aid emergency numbers and has room for the user to write their families’ numbers to stay connected and ensure they are reunited if they are displaced.
